I can print less (and I do) but when I do have to print what can I do to consume less ink / paper / resources and save money?

Here's an idea that's rather interesting - a font that's built with holes in it to use less black ink. The makers of this say that you'll be able to save up to 20% of your printing costs - oh and it looks better when printed - those little holes aren't nearly so noticable.

Here are my solutions to save when printing. Depending on usage of printed material, these points may be relevant or not:

  • I print both sides of paper
  • two or four document pages on same paper page
  • low quality printing
  • avoid printing as much as possible: I don't like piles of papers that will eventually finish their lives in trash can. Most of the time I work on electronic documents.
  • I use a monochrome laser printer: Cost per page is very cheap compared to ink jet printers

  • Don't throw away papers that are printed only on a single side - use them later, the opportunity will come.
  • In my office, I often lock away the papers - this encourages other people to print less as well.
  • Study the software that came with your printer, so that the default printing method (when you're in a rush) - will be duplex and monochrome.
  • Buy and use recycled paper. This also promotes the recycling economy.
  • Kids just love to do stuff with used papers and paste - find a local kindergarten/grandma, and ask if they need some :)
  • I read PDFs off my Kindle. A great paper-replacement technology.
  • Develop the habit of thinking that waste=something's-wrong. Every time I have to "throw away" stuff, I know that there is no "away". This encourages me to produce less waste.
  • Hugh, and a friend just sent me this: A printer that uses no consumables. Maybe we'll soon see these around :)
