You do not need to register if you just want to ask or answer a question. You do need to register if you want to earn reputation which lets you vote, retag, and edit.

To register for StopTheSearch.com, click the login link at the top of the page. Rather than storing users and passwords ourselves, StopTheSearch.com integrates with OpenID accounts. Basically this is a new "login once, go to any site" technology. If you already have one (it will look like a web address starting with http:// your-username.your-provider.com /), then enter it into the text box on the login page (including the http://) and click the Login button. If you don't have one (or think you don't have one), keep reading...

Any website can become an OpenID provider. Many, like Google, Facebook, and Yahoo! already are. If you don't have any of those, you can get a new OpenID by following this procedure:

  • Go to https://www.myopenid.com/signup
  • Make up a user name Put in a password
  • Enter any email address you want to use
  • Enter the text in the captcha
  • Check the I Agree to... checkbox
  • Click Sign Up

That should give you an OpenID and it will look like a website address (http://...myopenid.com). You can use that on any OpenID site including StopTheSearch.com.

If you have a Google or Yahoo account, then you already have an OpenID. Scott has a nice write-up of all of your options on moms4mom (moms4mom is another site that uses the same software, so those instructions should work here on StopTheSearch).

Thanks Anton, I contacted moms4mom.com ahead of time and asked to copy the text since the answer on their site by Scott was pretty much perfect. I switched out their URL and stuck in ours :) You can see the original at: moms4mom.stackexchange.com/questions/6/… – Jeff Sep 23 at 3:25
@Jeff: You should fix the part that says "I've posted other answers below with instructions on:\\ Logging in if you have a Google (Gmail) account\\ Logging in if you have a Yahoo! account" – Anton Geraschenko Sep 23 at 3:51
