I have a flat with a small, semi-protected balcony. Nevertheless, it can get quite breezy at times. I'd like to experiment with wind generation. But what kind of turbine would be suitable? And how much energy am I likely to get out of it?

You should pick up (or rent) an Anemometer to measure the strength and quality of the wind that you're getting. I found one site that rents them though you'd probably do best to contact a local technician if possible - Choose Renewables.

You'll also need to check with your local by-laws to see if a turbine is allowed in your building - there are many people opposed to turbines due to (real or perceived) noise pollution.
