Not that I'm planning it any time soon, but does anyone have any reliable data to support the eco-benefits of one over the other? Or are there other alternatives that are greener?

Good question, and no matter how old/young you are, this sort of decision should be thought about and discussed with loved ones. – Nathan Nov 3 at 14:23

Perhaps if we had a different view of burials and the afterlife this may be an easier choice... rather than treating cemeteries as sacred lands which can't be touched we should approach cemeteries as a place for rebirth. If we were to bury the bodies then plant a tree or bush to mark the spot we'd be taking a small bite out of our CO2 levels and we'd be using our land to the optimum advantage.

I would think that if we could re-use our cemeteries turning them into parks and urban playgrounds we'd be able to honour the dead and keep the land usable.
